ABOUT US

ABOUT US

A Luxury Lifestyle and Décor company based in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Established in 2019.

A 25-year-old friendship and dream that became a reality! muhle was Co-Founded by Susan O’Brien (SA) and Antoinette Matthews (USA) ex SA. Original Designs by Susan O’Brien.

The name muhle means beautiful in the Zulu language. A tribute to our South African Roots.

Soft furnishings and décor are the easiest way to give any space a facelift. In this day and age, we are spoilt for choice. Having said this, it is sometimes challenging to find items that are unique, distinct and different. This is the space we operate in, striving to create luxurious décor items that are both original and authentic.

Collections can be divided into two, the first is inspired by all things South African, using local materials and subject matter that celebrates this country. The second is what we call ‘Art Meets Décor’ these are beautiful and functional items created from Sue’s original art, whether they begin as pencil drawings, paintings or other media they are completely unique.

MATERIALS

Some of our ranges include Shweshwe fabric which is native to South Africa, for example this is a main feature in our African Boho Range.

Our exclusive range of printed fabrics created from Susan O’Brien’s original designs and artworks.

All other fabrics and trimmings used in the making of muhle products are selected for their quality, luxurious look, feel and vibrant colour. These include, Shweshwe Fabric - Three Cats by Da Gama, Cotton Canvas Fabric - Da Gama Textiles,

Fringing - House of Passementerie, Zips - YKK and Embroidery Thread - Isacord.

THREE CATS SHWESHWE BY DA GAMA - This fabric has a long history dating back to the 1840’s where it is said that it was gifted to the Lesotho King Moshoeshoe by French missionaries. The King made it popular with his tribe and with time the popularity spread through all African tribes. There is only one genuine version which is trademarked “Three Cats”.

HOUSE OF PASSEMENTERIE - Shunning the white walls and neutral furnishings of minimalism for a glamorous blend of colour and texture. Too much is never enough when it comes to creating a home and making it a personal celebration of all things beautiful this is echoed in our fringing and trimmings.
